Thanks for the City Circle stuff.

Does anybody know when the free vintage tram loop and the free tram zone, respectively, in Melbourne and the free sector of the Adelaide tram were introoduced and by which government in each case? (I can work out the government if necessary if a get a date for each.)

Hi Tony,

Melbourne City Circle started April 1994 - it was the fulfilment of an election promise to provide 'free tram travel in the city centre' - not fully delivered until much later.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Circle_tram

In early days it was operated with a variety of heritage trams, then cut back to only sliding door trams with improved braking etc.

Within the next few years it will become a W8 only service.

Mal Rowe - who would eventually like to see more modern 'heritage trams' like 101 and 2001 joining the service fleet.
