Interestingly, one of the financially profligate projects being most quoted in Wollongong in the opposition to the proposal to charge fares for the Gong Shuttle (to raise a mere $1 million a year directly from users) is the $1 BILLION dollar blowout on CSELR.
I see it as a NSW Government modification of the age-old advice: look after the pennies and the punds will destroy themselves.
