Tony,
Adelaide Flexities have side destinations adjacent to the cab on both sides. The photo shows a topical destination currently appearing on most Glenelg trams, although some are showing Moseley Sq. The Citadis have a LED desto on the middle section on both sides which is rather smaller.

Rear facing route number boxes are quite important if the tram or bus is standing at the stop (maybe along with several others) and you're approaching from behind. Otherwise many a vehicle pulls out whilst one is frantically running up to the front to see where it is going! Side desto boxes do mitigate this a little but I don't think Australian tram operators like using these as I don't recall seeing them in any city here currently and certainly not down towards the back of the vehicle (?).
