RE: 3013 mfb training
  Hinman, Dave

We had fire hose bridges in Christchurch. I believe some were made locally at the time of the Ballantynes Fire in 1947 (large department store in the city with factory above and our worst fire disaster - 41 died). Because they were damping down the fire for several days the bridges were placed on the tracks in Colombo St so tram services could resume. The street had been totally blocked during the height of the fire. They were made of old horse tram (strap) rail, which was also used for re-railing derailed trams. Ferrymead has a pair, now being looked after by the fire museum.

Dave in ChCh, resolving to have a look in the Hall of Flame to see if they are currently on display.

Hi Noel,

In Melbourne just the hint of a fire was enough excuse for a fire engine to be parked on the tram line.

One evening I was pulling into the then safety zone outside the city baths coming from the Uni when a fire engine entered the zone from the south end and stopped on the track right in front of me.

There had been a chlorine leak at the baths and they responded. So I was stuck there until they felt like moving.

I had a neutral attitude to emergency services before joining the tramway but it did not take long for impressions to become quite negative at least for 2 of the 3.

So if Melbourne ever had fire hose jumpers, they certainly were rendered useless by the late 1980s if not sooner.

Are things any different now?

Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,
In your recent email you mentioned fire brigades and trams.

This reminded me of the fire-hose bridges which trams [streetcars] in the USA used to allow them to cross fire hoses. Does anyone know if these devices have been used in Australia or elsewhere ?

Years ago in Stuttgart Germany it was the city fire brigade which attended to tram derailments etc, I believe. Possibly this is or was standard German practice.
