> There a some more memories of Victorian transport this week. First off, some photos of the Wirth’s Circus Train at Lilydale in 1962. They show just how times have changed and for the better when one sees the large caravans beside circuses these days. Accommodation was provided in old carriages, two of which had a high heritage value and were later restored for special train use for many years. Those two carriages, 12BL and 13BL, still exist but sadly have deteriorated and haven’t turned a wheel for some years. They are under cover now and hopefully a tourist railway may one day have the resources to restore them for further service.

> Carriage 12BL. This was one of the two cars retained and restored by volunteers for heritage train use after their days on the Circus Train had ended.

> The following three photos were taken at Laverton, a suburb west of Melbourne on the main line to Geelong. Back in the early 1960s when the first of these photos was taken, Laverton was mostly populated by Services Personnel at the nearby Air Force Base. How that scene has changed now with a massive amount of housing in the area and the Air Force Airport closed. Some Air Force activity remains but it only occupies a small part of the land the Base one contained.

>

> The railway has changed greatly too. Track duplication reached Laverton in 1965 and electric trains began operating through Laverton to Werribee in September 1984. The Melbourne to Adelaide standard gauge line was opened through Laverton in 1995 and parallels the broad gauge lines.

>

> My first photo shows Laverton before track duplication and as very much a country style location with several sidings. A Melbourne bound goods train has overtaken a rail enthusiast special steam train via a loop track at the station. A group of railway houses is beside the railway and a few other houses can be seen to the left of the photo. Today, that vacant railway land is nearly all car parking and presents a vastly different scene.

> Another view of Laverton station 10 years later looking towards Melbourne.. Note the small goods shed, stock race and brown coal briquette depot in the middle distance. The line

> has been duplicated and a new island platform has been provided. 9 January 1973.

> A view from the platform looking towards Werribee.

>

> The final photo at Laverton taken in July 2011 shows an extra track and platform. Behind the extra platform is the Melbourne to Adelaide standard gauge track. Due to the huge amount of housing nearby, Laverton has a very large car parking area. Part of it can be seen above the new platform and at the very top right of the photo below.

>

> I am finishing with three tram photos. Two of them were taken on the Footscray section before some short lines closed. They are the only photos I took of the four wheel trams operating at Footscray.

> The final photo was taken at the Essendon Football Siding in Napier Street. It diverged from the then Essendon Airport line in Fletcher Street, near where it turns into Mount Alexander Road and ran up to the Essendon Football Ground.
