The gripman's call "Mind the Curve" became a well known warning in early
Melbourne. Passengers on the dummy learned to hold on as their tram rounded
curves at speed. But early versions of the dummy (and I think the dummy in
this photo is one) had few suitable rails to hold on to - and some
passengers flew off their seats. So extra vertical stanchions were soon
added to both sides.
