Hi Matthew,
I'm guessing that your Brunswick friends live in West Brunswick and use the 55 - which has a staple of Z3s and B2s.
Sydney Rd (route 19) is now nearly all D2s - which are a little better than D1's in a seats per metre length rating.
The Combinos were always a poor design from a passenger point of view and the elimination of 8 seats to allow body bracing made them worse.
Lygon St does see D1s - as the route 8 service is shared between Brunswick and Malvern Depots.
I see in the press release which Alastair posted that routes 59 and 55 are listed as in line to see E class trams.
I'd still prefer a B on my 59 route but an E will be fine.
I'm not sure how having Es on 55 fits in with through routing with 8?
An E at the route 8 terminus at Glenferrie Rd would be a sight to behold.
