The Wallsend tram line was double track as far as "White Gates" between
Jesmond and Wallsend.
There was however a single track section where the tramway passed beneath
the Old Lambton Colliery railway.
Following duplication, the single line section was changed to Gauntlet Track
with tram staff safeworking over the short section below the railway.
This gauntlet track was at a low point on the line and the track was subject
to flooding.
Marker posts were provided to show the maximum depth allowable for electric
trams to pass through.
