The railway viaduct between Spencer St (Southern Cross) and Flinders St
stations is a favourite place for tired truckies to ALMOST fit their
oversize vehicles underneath.
Here's a pic I found in the SLV collection showing that part of the
viaduct in the early 1920s when the electrification was new.

You can make out the cable tram tracks at left AND a railway track that
runs into the back of the Fish Market from the right, under the viaduct.
I'm guessing that this is what was left of the old surface level
connection between the two stations.
A bit more searching turned up another pic that really surprised me.

It seems that before big road vehicles ALMOST got through railway wagons
ALMOST got jammed.
