If the future tramway was built entirely on the streets between Newcastle and Broadmeadow, some of the attached 1950s views could be replicated in the future.
There are several Newcastle 'LP' trams still existing in the Hunter area. If these trams could be restored to operation and joined by 'LP' 154 on vacation from Loftus, a good weekend vintage tram service could attract tourists and enthusiasts to experience some of the enjoyable electric traction of sixty-five years ago.

Agreed, the Newcastle light rail should be on street unless there is a suitable reservation immediately available - which I doubt from memory.
But there would be value in electrifying to Maitland/Telerah, with trains from Sydney being split at Broadmeadow, part going to Newcastle Terminal and part to Maitland. This would permit a decent Newcastle to Telerah service using perhaps a two car version of the Waratah sets, with all axles motored and track brakes, so as to get good acceleration, braking and high speed. Think of it as a tramway. The timing from Maitland to Newcastle should be considerably less than the timing by road, in uncongested periods.

Nothing about the fact that a tram line in Hunter Street, rather than the rail easement, would be more convenient for its users because it directly interfaces with local activity and it would be possible to have twice as many stops, thus much more convenient.
Usual subliminal "out of sight, out of mind" attitude towards public transport.
Having said that, I don't support the rail easement being developed either.
