Re: Re: Sydney's Light Rail stoppage to roll on for days

After observing the saga over the sleeper replacement fiasco am I surprised that worn wheels where not replaced?

The Variotrams were due for a half-life refit and the cost of new trams from CAF worked out to be only marginally more, so the decision has been made to replace them, so all up, Sydney should have 12 new trams and the 1 leased from Malaga and 3 from Seville. That should be sufficient to operate the line including the Dulwich Hill extension.

There was a press release today to that effect and it also mentioned that the Variotrams will be sold. The asking price is believed to be quite high and that, coupled with the length of the cars and the shortage of space at Loftus, even with the newly completed south shed, will no doubt prevent STM from preserving one.

With more trams it will be possible to operate an enhanced service during peak periods, rather than the present ten minute all day frequency which results in overcrowding. There are many benefits to government ownership.

Dick in still tramless Sydney, and about to head south.

Speaking to several light rail employees that have been redeployed to supervise the replacement bus stops, the cause of the two derailments has now been determined; all the now Variotrams require new metal tyres which will take some time to procure and fit.

What is this about? C’mon, someone must have a theory why a light rail line can be shut down for days and people inconvenienced?
