Hello Stephen,

I was able to travel on the Cavendish Road tram line back in the fifties.
Here are several pictures with FM trams decorated with the Royal Coat of
Arms, "E 11 R" , and "Welcome to our Queen". on the occasion of the 1954
Royal Visit.

Items to note --

1. FM tram 535 was fitted with resilient wheels. This was indicated by a
stainless steel bumper and the letter "R" beneath the number. '

2. Note the drooping 'Down' trolley wire alongside the 'Up' trolley wire
held up by the poles of two trams standing at the terminus.

Noel Reed.

Many thanks Stephen for your information.

If I can push my luck a little further, was the Gregory Tce service to the
city via Upper Edward St. Did this service terminate at GT or was it
connected at Petrie Tce/Countess St, and then "Gardens" at the city end?
If I understand correctly, this required the use of single truck cars[?].

with thanks

Greetings ladies, gentlemen, siblings, GBLT's etc, etc,

I think I can answer a few of these questions, hopefully accurately.

The tramway in Gregory Terrace ran from east from Brunswick St (regular
double track turnout) for a couple of blocks down to Alexandria St. The
double track line had two crossovers and converged to single track just east
of Costin St in front of the main entrance to the RNA grounds. The single
track swung into Alexandria St to form a loop, by returning to Brunswick St
via St Paul's Tce, south of the RNA grounds. There was also a short
extension up the hill in Gregory Tce from Alexandria St to Brookes St,
though I never saw a tram in service on that section. The track in
Alexandria St was connected in both directions to Gregory Tce, forming a
triangular single track junction. All this complexity was required to serve
the RNA showgrounds, especially for the annual Exhibition in August.
Exhibition specials ran up from the city and there was a constant traffic
during Exhibition week. The track in Gregory Tce was one of the last
sections to disappear, being intact and uncovered well into the 1970's.

Hopefully you're not referring to the "Gregory Terrace" service which ran up
from the city via Upper Edward St, Leichhardt St and Wickham Tce until 1947.
That's a whole different story. Gregory Terrace was just the destination.
Those trams didn't actually run on Gregory Terrace. That line was
double-tracked except at the ends. Let me know if you want more details.

By Stanley Bridge, you probably mean the Story Bridge, which carries the
Bradfield Highway. I've never heard any stories that there was any plan to
run trams across it. Apparently there was talk of running trams on the
William Jolly Bridge when it was built in the early 1930's but that never
came to anything.

Time for lunch; gotta go!

Cheers, Stephen Lindburg
