Mal Rowe - who thinks the stops are OK, but the median should go

Mal, Mal, Mal!!! When will you people learn?? In fact, I'm surprised
that the Terror / whichever Murdoch publication ran this story, didn't see
the obvious solution in the first place.

Get rid of the Fire Department.

Problem solved.

Melbourne firemen are concerned that platform tram stops are "putting lives

emergency vehicles a free passage past traffic and it's a safety hazard?

The story has become a little distorted in the media report.
That's not unusual!

My understanding is that the emergency services concern is primarily about
the section of High St Northcote which has island stops AND a high median
strip for about 1km.
See attached or: http://tdu.to/Median_HighSt_1Mar2013.JPG

The report does mention Hiogh St specifically towards the end.

It's my understanding that the median was the request of the local council
who wanted to 'encourage' motorists to use the parallel St Georges Rd to
preserve the atmosphere of the High St shopping strip.
It has the effect of preventing emergency service vehicles crossing over to
the opposite lane.
The effect of the tram stops themselves is minor.
