In this case I saw one such attachment. It was an image of 1 pixel.

I've seen some email clients do this to establish a back ground colour.
Only slightly less annoying than those people who insist on a full
background image behind their email text.
And if you reply to such a message and don't trim...


Also attaching a link to a 1 pixel image is a common way to doing
email view tracking. Your email client dutifully downloads the image
link and 'cause it's a 1x1 transparent image, you don't see it. But a
server some where has logged your downloading of the stupid 1x1
transparent image.
