No Dudley -- it ran to St Kilda Beach. I and a school mate caught it from there one Sunday morning and travelled to Royal Park, armed with tomahawks, to dig for fossils. Later the terminus was the crossover South of Domain Rd where it caused delays.

I was also at the Flagstaff Gardens the first day that the other William St peak routes commenced --- routes using "3" in the route numbers, such as 34, 35, 36, 37 and so on, East Brighton being 65 which, as I've claimed numerous times, was MY idea. The MMTB Manager wrote to me saying that it wasn't needed (64 would suffice) but the same day his letter arrived so did the first tram showing 65.

The extensive delays at Domain with these routes merging in and out was keenly in my mind re the recent plan to redesign the junction . I look forward to the Easter work with great interest though within TDU it seems to have become a kind of battle between double enders and single enders which to me has nothing to do with the matter at all. Maybe if Domain works out well the much debated and deferred or abandoned Toorak terminus re-design could get another airing.

To the best of my recollection, route 55 used to run through to Toorak via Route 8. Or somewhere like that. The dead end terminus at Domain Interchange was introduced so as to provide a suitable layover at Domain and aid interchange from all southern routes to the William Street services.

I think there was more than one route using William Street at some stage, but may be wrong on that, perhaps confusing weekday numbers with weekend numbers.

David, nice sketch.

It's unimaginable, however, that St Kilda Rd services on the down would have to wait for Route 55 trams to turn around before being able to begin a Sturt or William St diversion - which as we know is not a rare occurrence.. As far as I know, Route 55 services have around an 8 minute intra-peak weekday lay up at Domain.

Obviously, if the 55 is through-routed with another St Kilda Rd route from the south (and I had been under the impression that the Route 5 was the most likely candidate for that) it wouldn't be an issue.

Time will tell, but do you have any other information that you can share with us?
