I checked an old diary for details of this 1966 trip north.

Having spent a few days at Newcastle I caught a train to Glen Innes on 1.4.66. Next morning (Saturday) train left Glen Innes for Wallengarra at 4.30am, arrival Brisbane 6.30pm! The trip by car today would take maybe 4 hours, but none of those rail services operate today. No doubt tired, my first tram ride was to Mt Gravatt that evening. The next 5 days were spent riding trams and taking slides and 8mm movie film of them, this latter being the reason more regular service trams were not recorded on slide film.
