RE: RE RM55 _ Honorary Tram
  Noel Reed

Hello Jeff,

'

I never saw the VR's Brill (Model 75 ?) railmotor which I believe had a
matching trailer. I recall seeing it mentioned in an old VR North -East
WTT.

I was told that it was borrowed from the SAR for a period and later the VR
bought it.

Is this correct ? Were the rail motor and trailer both scrapped ?

I once travelled in the NG SAR Brill rail motor shown in the attached
picture. Note the type of trucks.

It seems strange that the DERMs could not operate in MU. Could they have
provided jumper cable fittings ?

Noel Reed.

Noel,

Thanks for the thread re 58RM.I have ridden Double DERMS,& they had to use 2
drivers a/c they could not M.U.

I have photographed double DERMS & DERMS in passenger trainconsists on the
Leongatha line, where they ran as far as Nyora, then the DERM went to
Wonthaggi.

I also seen a R class hauled DERM come into Dandenong from Leongatha, where
the R uncoupled & DERM proceeded to Melb, then R class ran L.E, to North
Melb. This was to save a separate L.E.path.I saw that practise on the
Bendigo-Echuca line in October 1974,but a T class was leading.

Finally did you ever get the Brill Railmotor at Echuca?

Jeff

The first time I saw a (DERM) it was in fact a PERM.

In 1949, I made a holiday trip to Adelaide via Melbourne . On the return
journey on 17.01.49 I travelled by the steam hauled day train from Adelaide
to Serviceton (Vic). The SAR line from Wolseley to Mt Gambier was then still
1067mm (3'' 6") gauge and required a change of trains at Wolseley.

After arrival at Serviceton in the afternoon, I spent several hours before
the arrival late at night of the eastbound "Overland" Express for a change
to A2 locos and travel to Melbourne .

Close to sunset, another arrival at Serviceton from the east, heralded by
the sound of an air horn, was Victorian Railways 58 RM in the early red
colour . At that time, the rail motor was powered by the original Winton
petrol engine. (Were these rail cars ever called "GERMs" or "GERCs" in
the USA where petrol is marketed as gasoline ?).

58 RM had apparently arrived from Dimboola where it would have connected
with a day train from Melbourne . I was able to obtain a picture of the
railcar before the sun set. In current rail fan parlance it might be termed
a 'glint' picture.

Some years later I learned more about these petrol electric rail motors and
that they used a power bogie similar to the Melbourne 'Tait' electric
trains. As far as I have been informed, the DERMs operated either singly or
hauling a trailer. Considering that they were fitted with an electric train
style controller and could be driven from either end, were they ever
operated in multiple unit, propelling a control trailer, or as a four car
train with a DERM each end and two trailers in between, similar to the
current operation of some Victorian interurban trains which operate with a
'P' clas DE loco each end ?

The Tasmanian Railways DP rail motors were able to operate in multiple unit,
as also were the NSWR CPH rail motors and the two and four car diesel trains
which could be driven from a trailer.

Was this type of MU operation ever considered for the VR Walker rail motors
to avoid their having to run around the trailer at a terminus ?

Noel Reed. Interested in electric traction from way back.

Noel Reed.

The VR DERMS were the only bi-directional EMC type rail motor in passenger
service.

I believe they last ran in 1960 in the U.S on the Gulf Mobile & Ohio R.R on
a service between Bloomington Ill & Kansas City MO.

Sperry Rail Services used former EMC Passenger Railmotor vehicles as track
recording cars.

They even came to Aust as I photographed one at Wodonga in April 1973.

G'day Jeff, Mal & All,

I also heard and believed the rumour that RM55 may have been imported in
some form, but time hasn't produced any concrete support information. In
fact the opposite is true.

Attached please find a report by the Acting CME (VR) in the VR Magazine for
April 1928.

The article makes no reference to the importation of the vehicle. The only
reference that can be found at the PROV is the importation of the power
unit, the 110 HP motors and various electrical components.

I think that Noyes Bros were the importing agents.

I think that the 110HP motors were replaced in the mid 50s???.

With the altered length, width and gauge, a one-off would have been very
expensive to make overseas.

The EMC parentage is without question and the VR probably used EMC drawings
to prepare their own drawings. I am not aware of any licence arrangements.

Similarly in the tramway scene there is a drawing in the MMTB collection
showing the cross section of a United Steel Railroad car bristling with
rivets etc. Then along comes Y 469 - ditto.

Regards

Kevin
