Although you noted that James' photo was taken at sunset the day after closure I think more likely it was taken around sunset on the actual day of closure (Saturday).
All the trams were driven from Footscray to Preston workshops during Sat afternoon and Sun morning. They followed a round-about sort of route (Footscray-Maribyrnong Rd-Union Rd-Racecourse Rd-Flemington Rd-Peel St-William St-shunt at Collins St-Latrobe St-and via other northern lines) to Preston. Accordingly the depot would have been empty by sunset on Sunday.
