Mechanical hand signals were quite common on buses and trucks in the 50's and 60's before flashing indicators were universal. The trolley buses had a red STOP light on the rear as well. The hand signal could be extended to indicate a right turn.

They were even used in Victoria.

Back on topic, Brisbane tram stops had HAIL TRAMS HERE in red lettering on white. Section stops, which were compulsory stops, and termini had white on red with TRAMS STOP HERE.
