Fences [was - Dual gauge tramways in Australia.]

Further to my comment at 12.26 am today, 18 March 2010 :-

"1. The result of a Sydney tramway which was not fenced. sufficiently.
Athol. 1942 "

It would be interesting to consider the likely result at Athol Wharf with R
1875, R 1890 and R1 2000. if well anchored fencing consisting of steel
cable ex cable tramways or mine haulage systems had been erected across the
end of the tracks at Athol.

Such steel cables are now in regular use along motorways in place of the
previous steel guard rails.

Note -- The side destination sign on R 1875 in the 1942 incident shows
"LONGUEVILLE". This Sydney suburb is beyond the Lane Cove tram terminus (the
unloading point of most R1 tram deliveries from Comeng in the fifties).
Longueville was a proposed but never built tram destination. It is unlikely
that this destination was displayed at the time of the incident so some
person with an inquisitive mind must have entered the "tram on the rocks"
and played with the destination sign.

There were several other "never built" tram destinations fitted on Sydney
trams. Some of these were "Newport" and "Bayview" (Manly lines), also
"Strathfield" and "Homebush" (Enfield lines).

Noel Reed. Who was not guilty of changing tram destinations until several
years after 1942 (I was then in Year 6 at primary school ).
