Sydney - Hobart on Boxing Day.
  Noel Reed

On Boxing Day 26 December each year the Sydney to Hobart ocean yacht race
commences near Watsons Bay close to the entrance to Sydney Harbour.

Every year up to 1960 when the City to Watsons Bay tramway closed, people
could travel by tram to Watsons Bay to view the sight of many yachts leaving
Sydney Harbour for Hobart.

At other times people without interest in things nautical could travel on
this picturesque tramway for the enjoyment of travel on steel rails.

Several elderly Sydney trams which spent their final years in service on the
Neutral Bay line on the opposite side of Sydney Harbour were used for two
such trips. The attached pictures show K 1296 and E 529-530 travelling
through 'The Glen' cutting on the climb from Watsons Bay to Vaucluse.

Today is 26 December 'Boxing Day' 2009 and many people who came to Watsons
Bay to see the yachts today would not realise that they could once travel by
tram. People can still see these trams among many others at the Sydney
Tramway Museum, Loftus NSW.
