RE: Re: Tram accidents at Athol Bay Wharf

Hello Greg,

I'm sorry but it was some time after taking that picture of the coupled R
cars at Circular Quay that I heard about the modifications made to No. 1890.

From what I have been told it, involved the removal of the partitions with
sliding doors between the end compartments and the drop centre section.

There may have also been vertical hand bars added. My guess (but to be
confirmed) is that with the ban on smoking in buses, trams and trains, it
was not seen as necessary to have a 'smoke barrier' inside the tram.

Noel Reed. Who often requested smokers in non smoking sections to
extinguish the fire.

Hi Noel and all
I was discussing your photo with a friend last night and he wanted to know
if anyone has a photo of the interior of this car after the modifications
were made after it was retrieved from the Harbour and returned to service.
Any help much appreciated.

Regards

Greg.

The attached picture shows R 1890, rebuilt with modifications after sliding
off the end of the track into Sydney Harbour at Athol (Zoo) Wharf terminus.
