RE: Re: Tram accidents at Athol Bay Wharf

Hello Ben & others,

The attached picture shows R 1890, rebuilt with modifications after sliding
off the end of the track into Sydney Harbour at Athol (Zoo) Wharf terminus.
It is towing another R car from Fort Macquarie Depot after its closure and
before demolition to clear the site for the Sydney Opera House. The trams
are entering the Customs House siding at Circular Quay which gave connection
from the George Street lines to the Pitt Street lines.

At the right side can be seen a P car leaving the Young Street Circular Quay
terminus for an Eastern Suburbs destination. The old dark building on the
right was replaced by one of Sydney's first high rise office buildings for
AMP Insurance.

Note - The driver of the P car is sitting on the 'drivers rest' a small
hinged seat. This is obviously an off peak time as during peak periods --
Working Orders 1937 page 172 (d) 3 require 'Drivers Rests not to be used'
i.e. trams to be driven while standing. Obviously a requirement intended to
keep drivers alert. Do other tramways require drivers to stand during busy
periods ? This may be difficult with many of the Melbourne trams.

Noel Reed.
