The mainline track past the Waiting Shed was one of the first laid over 20 years ago in soil and grass, and as such the wood sleepers have rotted away underground and the gauge widened to the point where a less-than-walking-pace restriction was applied and a few near-derailments [and the direct cancellation of 'Trams After Dark' for safety reasons], the section was closed and major work started. The eventual plan is to concrete that area off and top it with bitumen.

In the meantime trams to Waratah Loop [Sutherland] are run over Cross Street with the wandering lead while National Park trams run from the platform.
