'U-boat' 4 of 4
  Roderick Smith

It is hard to believe that the last run of the U sets was 10 years ago.
SETS planned an ambitious day for Sat.3.11.96: a speed run to Newcastle,
photostops on the way back, then an urban tour.
The train was CF5011-ETB6031-TF6010-CF5019-CF5037-TF6005-ETB6040-CF5005,
with target plate U1.
The express run was plagued with short stops and slow sections.
Sydney Central pfm 4 d 8.05; Newcastle pfm 3 a 10.25.
Between the slow points, there was some very impressive fast running.
The return ran via North Sydney and Sydney Central pfm 19 to Penrith, then
via the new Y link to Macarthur, and back via East Hills and Tempe for a
further run around the city circle (photostop at Museum). Passengers
alighted at Sydney Central pfm 23 at 17.28, and the empty train continued to
a depot (Flemington? Redfern?), ending a career of just under 40 years.

SETS used to archive tour reports (www.sets.org.au). On a quick check, the
site has a list of all tours, with copies of most booking forms since 2000,
but no tour reports.
