There is an interesting story here.

Scott street between this intersection (Market St) and Merewether St (Civic) did not exist until the trams came and it was created by slewing the railway - note the kink in the track just this side of the signal box. The railway was moved again around 1938.

Ross Willson advised that the railway could not open to the beach until the interlocking was fixed. That did not apply to the tramway but no doubt to the railway due to the slewing. It is most likely that this small dunny like structure at the level crossing was the first Market Street signal box. Note the gate wheel and at least one lever and probably 3 visible through the open door.
