Also the fact that B sets are currently under construction, so it's the
price for the Chinese factory to turn out one more B set, or Australian
labour to repair the structural damage on the A set.

I don't believe a decision has actually been made to scrap/repair that
set yet, but it's going to be near thing - and it will be up to the
train supplier - they are contracted to ensure a certain number of sets
are available. How they meet that target is up to them to a degree.

That A set crumpled in all the places I expected it would in a head on
with an 'immovable object'. It appeared there were no intrusions into
the passenger space.

See this for what happens when a Citadis 302 derails on a crossover and
hits a centre span pole.

There have also been derailments where the nose has veered off the
trails and hit a span pole (or wall!) and the tram has snapped it's
articulation at the 2-3rd section. They were not as extreme as the
Valenciennes accident that caused the tram to completely separate, but
they busted em good and proper.

The set of photos above give you a good view of how a Citadis 302 is put
together :-)

I've ridden that line - it's partially interurban and the they fly past
that depot at 80km/hr. (With a pronounced Citadis 'waddle'.) The broken
tram was leaving the depot I believe and the rear bogie decided to take
a different route from the first two.
