The long wait to walk: Dockers fans get first crack at Matagarup Bridge walk to Optus Stadium 13 July 2018.
The highlights have been few and far between for Fremantle fans in 2018, but many on Sunday may get a kick out of walking to Optus Stadium over the Matagaraup Bridge when it finally opens.
Main Roads WA confirmed the long-awaited $83 million bridge would be ready for AFL fans to use for the first time when Fremantle takes on Port Adelaide at 2.40pm.
The Matagarup Bridge connects fans in East Perth and the CBD to Optus Stadium over the Swan River. Photo: Main Roads Footy fans have been urged to catch public transport or get dropped near the bridge for the 370m walk to the $1.8 billion stadium because of limited parking options in East Perth.
The long-awaited footbridge opening has sparked a raft of changes to transport routes to the stadium precinct.
For those taking a train, Claisebrook is a 15-minute walk to the East Perth side of the bridge.
The new CBD shuttle circle route will now take fans via Wellington Street, Milligan Street, and Adelaide and St Georges Terraces to the stadium.
Public Transport Authority spokesman David Hynes said fans needed to take heed of the changes.
"We’ve been testing the new bus station and routes for some time now but, like anything new, we expect there may be some minor teething problems as drivers and passengers adjust to the new routes," he said.
"We would like to thank those passengers in advance for using public transport, and hope they take advantage of this new CBD route which has been designed to take you past several major CBD car parks and close to busy precincts like Yagan Square and Elizabeth Quay."
Mr Hynes said early planning had indicated about 14,000 people would use buses to get to the ground.
"So far up to 18,000 fans have been using the special event bus services, so we are really keen to ensure we continue to offer a user-friendly service on game days," he said.
PTA bus route changes:
Bus route 661 will now take a modified circular route via Wellington Street, Milligan Street, and Adelaide/St Georges Terraces to East Perth.
The route will no longer enter Elizabeth Quay Bus Station, so passengers will need to board from St Georges Terrace (Stops 10116 and 10119).
Several departure stands for existing bus routes have also changed, including:
•Route 650 (Karrinyup) will now depart from stands 18-22 •Route 656 (Canning Vale) will now depart from stands 10 and 11 •Route 657(Curtin University) will now depart from stands 8 and 9 •Route 654 (Ellenbrook Town Centre) will depart from stands 12 and 13, on the west side of Perth Stadium Bus Station The controversial footbridge missed several deadlines for its public launch, with May and June opening dates delayed due to complications with lifting and connecting its central arch.
Fans are urged to check new transport routes to the bridge. Photo: PTA A two-year delay opening the bridge was partly due to hold-ups with a Malaysia-based manufacturer contracted under the previous Liberal government.
Labor terminated that contract after it won the 2017 state election and then employed local fabricators to finish the job.
Fremantle will wear their purple "home" Indigenous jumper for the match to honour NAIDOC Week.
