You still have more than three weeks to apply for one of Victoria's retired
trams! Hear some of the fascinating stories behind the historic W-Class
trams <www.victrack.com.au/trams>.
Why are Melbourne's most iconic trams called the W class? In 1921, T P
Strickland - a Sydneysider - became Chief Engineer. He classified tram types
by letter, like in Sydney. The existing types were given A-V, so his new
design was called the W.

Queensland Budget 2018: Go Card to be replaced by mobile app.

..Huge cash grab from waste levy.
PUBLIC transport ticketing is set to be revolutionised with commuters able
to pay for their trips from a range of smart devices in an attempt to lessen
the need for a Go Card in the future.
Mobile phones, smart watches and credit cards will all be able to be used to
pay for a fare on Queensland public transport under a plan to make it easy
for anyone to use services.
Trials are expected to begin later this year after $371 million was
committed over four years to refine the service.
Queensland Treasurer Jackie Trad delivers the state's 2018-19 budget at
Parliament House today. Picture: Dan Peled/AAP
Almost $90 million has been allocated for the upcoming financial year to
begin the implementation of the technology with a further $2 million
allocated for a trial and pilot program.
Treasurer Jackie Trad said she expected the change in ticketing to
contribute to an increased amount of public transport fares.
"We know that when we make public transport more convenient, more people get
on board," she said.
"Part of that is making paying for a fare easy and accessible."
Ms Trad said that while a final design for the project was yet to be decided
on, it would be aimed at giving commuters "more flexibility" when it came to
ticketing options.
The move would not signal the end of the Go Card or physical ticket for
casual users.
"New technologies including using wearable devices, your smart phone or
credit and debit cards to pay for public transport are all on the table in
addition to the existing go card and paper ticket options," she said.
"We are finalising a global procurement process and expect to be able to
announce the successful proponent in the near future.
"The project will then move into the design and implementation phase, with a
trial of the new system to roll out during 18/19."
The majority of the funding for the new program is expected to roll in
during 2019-20, with $104 million allocated towards the project along with a
further $176 million over the following two years.

From ugly concrete blocks to street furniture: Anti-terror bollards to be
replaced 12 June 2018.
The temporary concrete blocks that have been used across the city as
anti-terror bollards will finally be replaced with permanent, reinforced
street furniture to protect Melburnians from vehicle attacks.
The blocks which have dotted the city's landscape for almost a year will be
replaced with planter boxes and metal seating when a rollout begins in July,
with the bollards on Flinders Street and Bourke Street the first to go.

Concrete blocks outside Southern Cross Station on Spencer Street, the State
Library, Federation Square, Princes Bridge, Southbank Promenade, Queen
Victoria Market, and Olympic Park will eventually be replaced.
Flowerbeds that serve as bollards are already a feature of the Bourke Street
Mall.

News of the rollout follows revelations an Islamic State extremist discussed
bombing landmarks including Queen Victoria Marke and St Paul's Cath-edral
earlier this year.
The state's counter-terrorism boss Assistant Commissioner Ross Guenther said
Melbourne was a "very attractive target" to extremists, with police keeping
a close eye on about 200 persons of interest.
Mr Guenther said more than 2500 terror-related reports were received and
investigated in Victoria last year alone. He added that more than 100
Australians currently living in and near conflict zones were at risk of
associating with IS supporters.
The new bollards will be a combination of planter boxes, flag poles,
seating, and "other design solutions", a Melbourne City Council spokesman
said.
"The measures are being designed in accordance with national and
international security standards to provide high levels of protection while
maintaining the amenity and use of our premier public spaces," he said.
"This represents the largest investment in Australia for protective measures
against hostile vehicles."
The council installed 206 temporary bollards in 10 central Melbourne
locations in July last year as an urgent anti-terror measure to prevent
vehicles ploughing into pedestrians.
But concerns were raised about the effectiveness of blocks, with one
mechanical engineer telling The Age they could slide for 30 metres if they
were hit by a car.
On Tuesday, Mr Guenther confirmed a family of amateur "jihadi hunters" in
the UK had been in contact with an IS supporter who discussed bombing Queen
Victoria Market, as well as Chadstone shopping centre.
Assistant Commissioner Ross Guenther, head of Victoria Police Counter
Terrorism Command. Photo: Luis Ascui.
The extremist, who is based in Pakistan, discussed planting a "sequence of
bombs" in the market and then driving a car, fitted with another bomb, into
a crowded area before blowing up the vehicle.
"The information was ultimately shared with our law enforcement security
parties who assessed that information and concluded it posed no credible
threat to Victoria," Mr Guenther said.
Mr Guenther stressed that despite the reports, there was no current threats
to any locations across Melbourne or Victoria.
"Such instructional material is not uncommon," he said. "I stress though
people should not be unnecessarily concerned."
Lord mayor Sally Capp said police had increased their presence around Queen
Victoria Market "just to give people confidence".
"But [police have] satisfied themselves and assured us that there is no
current threat," she said.
UK newspaper The Sun reported in March that a "jihadi hunter" family living
in the Midlands was using encrypted apps and social media to engage with
fighters, and gather information about their activities.
video: Concrete bollards may not protect us Experts warn concrete bollards
in Melbourne's CBD could move 30 metres if hit at 40km/h with a car.
Their efforts reportedly helped foil a suicide bomb attack on an Armed
Forces parade, and an attack on the Queen during a commemorative ceremony in
2015.
Mr Guenther said it was very unlikely any Australians were imitating the UK
jihadi hunters but said if that changed he would likely know about it.
"We wouldn't recommend that members of the public do that. It's a very
unsafe practice," Mr Guenther said.
Police Minister Lisa Neville said the security of pedestrians in Melbourne
was "paramount".
"We're investing in more CCTV and bollards in the CBD, to ensure the safety
of those who live, work and visit in our city is a priority," she said.

Driver barriers to be installed on Brisbane buses 12 June 2018.
Driver-protection barriers will start being installed on Brisbane buses from
July 1.
The installation of the barriers was a finding of the Bus Driver Safety
Review that the state government ordered in September 2015.
Brisbane City Council has announced it will install bus driver protection
barriers from July 1,2018. Photo: Glenn Hunt.
One month after the review was ordered Manmeet Sharma died during an
unprovoked attack while he was behind the wheel of a Brisbane City Council
bus.
In May 2017 the council released its own independent review, completed by
Aussafe Consulting, into the death of Mr Sharma, which found a driver
barrier could be helpful depending on the nature of the incident.
On Friday, Transport Minister Mark Bailey released the government's response
to the Bus Driver Safety Review, which included $3.93 million for protective
driver-safety barriers, which operators could apply for as part of a 50-50
government grant.
On Tuesday, council's public and active transport chairman Adrian Schrinner
announced the council would begin rolling out barriers on buses.
"From July 1 we will commence our program of rolling out barriers and we
will be applying for that 50 per cent grant as soon as we are required to do
so," he said.
"We carried out consultation with our drivers last year and there was a
strong response from our drivers for some sort of barrier."
Cr Schrinner said he envisaged the barriers would be a partial barrier and
that any new buses ordered in the coming financial years would come off the
production line equipped with the driver protection barriers.
Opposition councillor Jared Cassidy welcomed the announcement barriers would
be installed on Brisbane's buses.
"We have been calling for this for some time," he said.
"Barriers won't resolve all issues on buses, but they will certainly help to
protect drivers from physical assault."

Council to deliver on election commitment for more CityCat services 12 June
2018.
Brisbane lord mayor Graham Quirk has allocated money in the 2018-19 council
budget to deliver on a 2016 election commitment for new CityCat services.
Cr Quirk announced the "SpeedyCat" services during his 2016 election
campaign.
A further $4.5 million has been budgeted for a new CityCat which would take
the current fleet to 22 vessels. Photo: Harrison Saragossi
The service promised then was to halve peak-hour CityCat travel times and
run between Teneriffe and the city, as well as between the University of
Queensland and the city.
On Monday Cr Quirk revealed the services would be funded in the 2018-19
budget, two years after the commitment was made.
The Brisbane City Council budget will be handed down on Wednesday.
Funding, understood to be about $1 million within the council CityCat and
ferry operating subsidy, would deliver the 100 new express "SpeedyCat"
services a week from September.
The funded services differ slightly from the election commitment and would
run from Northshore Hamilton, as opposed to Teneriffe.
Cr Quirk said the service would be part of a $68 million spend over the
coming year for new river transport services.
"A further $19.3 million will be dedicated towards upgrading ferry terminals
across the city, including a major overhaul of the Guyatt Park ferry
terminal and St Lucia," he said.
A further $4.5 million has been budgeted for a new CityCat which would take
the current fleet to 22 vessels.
Opposition councillor Kara Cook accused the LNP and Cr Quirk of being
arrogant and out of touch following the announcement.
"They have conveniently left Bulimba off the new express CityCat service
list," she said on Twitter.
"Is this more punishment for the residents of Morningside for not voting the
way they wanted at the recent byelection?"

Major makeover planned for Box Hill Central by landlord Vicinity Centres.
Whitehorse Leader June 12, 2018.
video: Inside the new-look Glen shopping centre.
BOX Hill Central is in line for a "very special" makeover, with landlord
Vicinity Centres planning to sell up to $1 billion of smaller retail assets
to pay for upgrades of its flagship centres.
Vicinity executive general manager of development Carolyn Viney described
Box Hill Central as a "high-quality asset".
While Vicinity was being tight-lipped about its exact plans, Ms Viney said
the group wanted to take advantage of Box Hill Central's "location,
demographics and projected population growth as well as the continued
evolution in what our customers want".
"We believe the opportunity exists to enhance what's already in and around
Box Hill with something not only complementary but something that brings a
point of difference for customers and the community," she said.
HAVE YOUR SAY: What shops would you like to see at Box Hill Central? Tell us
below
"The scale of our landholding (equivalent to about four CBD blocks) and its
strategic position directly above the train station gives us a unique
opportunity to do something very special and that's what we're working hard
to do."
It doesn't look much now, but Box Hill Central is getting a "very special"
makeover.
Whitehorse Business Group chairwoman Kathryn Collier said news of the
investment was "a feather in the cap" for Box Hill.
"When it's completed it will be a fantastic centre and will probably have
some different offerings to what we've had before," she said.
"It will be good to see how it's transformed. It still has a bit of a market
feel and I'm sure they'll keep some of that flavour but they'll add
something new to make it more attractive and appealing."
It comes as a much-needed boost to the retail sector in the area after Big W
announced it was closing its Forest Hill store as reported last month in the
Whitehorse Leader.
Vicinity's asset-sale plans come amid a challenging retail environment, with
cautious consumers worrying about lacklustre wages growth or turning to
online shopping platforms such as Amazon.
Vicinity chief executive Grant Kelley said: "You've got to, in a challenging
environment, specialise more than you had to in the recent past."
Box Hill Central is owned and managed by Vicinity and includes Big W,
Woolworths, Coles and Harris Scarfe and more than 190 speciality retailers.
