RE: Hobart 17 (aka 111)

Mal Rowe notes that <today's pic from our anonymous donor has to have been made between 1937 and 1947>.

A convenient, but time-consuming method of dating photographs of Hobart trams is to survey the advertisements adorning their aprons. Hobart was well-provided with movie theatres during the 30s 40s 50s. Competition was fierce and theatres promoted themselves on the trams.

Our anonymous donor's image is a classic example. The 'Strand' was in Liverpool St, later becoming the 'Odeon', but better known to Saturday matinee patrons as the 'Bug-House'.

All you have to do is to trawl through the Mercury newspaper to find when 'Spring Hits Parade' was screening. To narrow the search, just confine it to the Spring season, or alternatively let someone else do it.

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] Hobart 17 (aka 111)

Today's pic from our anonymous donor has to have been made between 1937 (when 17 was built) and 1947 (when it was renumbered 111)

I can't see the number on the car behind it, but it looks to be of the same series - the final design for Hobart.

I do notice that the two cars have different roof ventilators.

Mal Rowe - rather hoping to ride a Hobart tram one day
