Some up to date photos have arrived showing the wheel lathe inside Road 5 of Southbank which was referred to in my recent video.
However the first 2 photos show Southbank Depot when new, and recently. It looks like the lean-to at the left side of the original workshop has been transferred across to the equivalent location on the 4 road extension. Overall a significant expansion of maintenance facilities.
The wheel lathe looks to be quite complex. While the old wheel grinders did the job, they were quite noisy and produced a lot of dust. I expect that these are somewhat quieter, cleaner and probably remove wheel flats and reprofile wheels much faster. In fact they must be faster as 2 lathes can cover the entire fleet instead of at least 4 depots with grinders.
It would be interesting to see a video of setting up and using this new lathe.
