If you want to use the groups web interface as apposed to having messages
sent to your own email, yes, you need a 'google ID' to login.

So you head of to the web site that doesn't even pretend when it comes to
selling your details off to any and all comers ?

Google at least pretended to care - at least until the lawyers and
financiers took over from the geeks.
