Correct David,

The double line finished in View Street at Barnard Street. In tramway days the intersection was known as the Five Lions Corner, named after the hotel of the same name on the south-east corner of the intersection. The Bendigo Art Gallery is on the right hand side of View Street, about half way between 'the Fountain' at Charing Cross and Barnard Street.

Cheers, Andrew C.

Indeed. IIRC, the Argus was staunchly anti-tram. Though it was before my time :-)

I recall the Sun (daily at dawn) offering free insurance to readers, in my childhood. I used to know Keith Dunstan and Geoff (Jeff) Hook; they both loved trams. Keith often wrote about them.

Interesting to see the linesmen's lack of safety gear; love their hats! And I bet they are wearing ties.

I presume that is the end of the double track in View Street, where it goes single and turns left into Barnard Street. Judith and I were interested to see the tram centre poles were still in place when we visited. IIRC she found an art gallery on the right hand side of View Street about here.

And from the Today view grahamj661 posted, the shops on the left are gone, but that elaborate house (?) on the far left corner past the intersection is still there.
