RE: Perth 85 again

Here is a rare photo of a tram running along Mounts Bay Rd on the northern bank of the Swan:

This would be before 1938 when this route was replaced by the trolleybus. The ferry wharves area is at the right of the photo which is taken from Mt Eliza (Kings Park) which is the high hill to the west of the city from which many panoramas of Perth are taken.

Behind the camera, the route eventually passes University of WA which, together with the nearby QE2 hospital, is a major traffic generator. Perth's (and at about 6 million passengers per annum, probably Australia's) single busiest bus route, the 950, now runs along here every few minutes, connecting the north-eastern suburb of Morley with the city and then UWA/QE2.

The long term plan is to build a new heavy-rail line out past Morley on the one hand and, on the other, connect UWA/QE2 with the city and Curtin University in the east by means of the future tram ("light rail") line that keeps on getting deferred. This line would not run along Mounts Bay Rd, but northwards along Thomas St, which is the road bounding the western side of Kings Park.

The section of Mounts Bay Rd in the above photo is now somewhat overshadowed by the Kwinana Freeway/Mandurah Railway in their run up to the Narrows bridge:
