OT Herne Bay Tram and Tramway
  Dudley Horscroft

I did get a glimpse at the Herne Bay tram when I was about 10 or 12. However, it was boarded up behind corrugated iron sheeting at
the land end of the pier. Just a single track the length of the pier only - as the pier is quoted as 1154 m, the track would have
been about 1000 m. Perhaps the shortest tramway in the UK, and single track only.

Of note is that the earliest tram on the pier was sail powered - except when the wind didn't blow, when it was human powered. (Pity
those massive windmills can't be human powered to keep the electricity supplies going when there is no wind.)

The tramway received a new tram in 1924, and this was last used in 1939 to carry army stores. As the pier had been broken by the
army in two places (to prevent troops landing) and the bits joined by wooden Bailey Bridges after the war, the tram(s) could no
longer be used and it (they) was (were) sold in 1959 for 12 pounds 10 shillings. That dates my view of it as 1945 to 1950.

Info from Wikipaedia - unfortunately disagrees with info at http://hernebaycoastalpark.org/herne-bay-pier/ which states that the
electric tram commenced operating in 1899. No info as to overhead or other power source!

In May 1901 two ex-Bristol Horse Trams were bought, and the tram operated as trailer-motor - trailer set. However, in July 1901 an
accident resulted in one of the trailers falling into the sea and a lady passenger being killed. The old tram was replaced in 1925
with a petrol-electric tram. However by 1934 it was becoming unreliable and a new battery powered tram was purchased which ran in
tandem with the old one. Multiple unit? Use the front one for power only? No idea!

The above site has a photo of the tram around 1925, labelled H. B. U. D. C. Looks new so is probably the new Petrol-Electric one.
