[OT] And now for something a little different
  Robbie Smith

It's not a tram, but it's definitely light rail. And don't let the 760 mm
gauge fool you: this is no Puffing Billy heritage railway (though they do
run steam trains a few days a week), it's a fully-functioning serious
railway, with regular passenger trains and goods trains, some of which are
carried on transporter wagons. It's independently owned, partially by the
local municipalities, and partially by private owners, with a small percent
ownership by the State.

The Zillertalbahn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zillertal_Railway, in
Tyrol, Austria:

This is cab view footage of the entire line, from the interchange with the
ÖBB in Jenbach up the Ziller valley to Mayrhofen.

It never ceases to amaze me that the Central and Eastern Europeans held on
to a lot of their (occasionally narrow-gauge) branch lines in a way that
the English-speaking world didn't. A line like this would've been closed
down by the 70's in Australia, if not a lot earlier. The population density
of this valley can't be much higher than some regional Victorian
areas—obviously the high mountains squeeze development into a narrow
corridor—and yet it's just that much more developed than a comparable
Victorian region. The closest analogue in Victoria might be the Ovens
valley south-east of Wangaratta, but the Bright railway line closed down in
the mid-80s and is now a rail trail.

What went wrong here? Why didn't the Austrians and Germans become quite so
infatuated with the motor vehicle like the English-speaking world did? It's
not like they didn't spend an absolute fortune building Autobahnen all over
the place, but somehow they still managed to keep their railways
functioning and didn't just abandon hope. From what my German friends tell
me, it all started to go wrong when they embraced the Anglosphere's
neoliberal policies post-EU. The corporatised DB is far worse than the old
Deutsche Bundesbahn.

(I would've posted this on Railpage, but that site has just become so
pointless in the last few years. There are either idiots, foaming gunzels,
or neoliberals, and little intelligent discussion to be found. You know
there's something wrong when members on a railway enthusiasts' bulletin
board are advocating for lines to be bustituted.)
