RE: Out of gauge [Was: Tram-train: where did we go wrong?]
  William Jackson

Been thinking about the different wheel / track profiles for trams (and
Light Rail) versus heavy rail. Would we think the different profile to heavy
rail was originally adopted so as to have as minimal a groove as possible
within urban streets? I'm only guessing here and it's a big generalisation
but would heavy rail wheels always be of a larger diameter than tram / light
rail? The larger the wheel the greater the gap that can easily be bridged at
crossings and points. With tram wheels and flange profiles being smaller
they would therefore need a much smaller space (gap) at points and frogs /
crossings. (How small were the small wheels on the maximum traction trucks?)
