To late at the 'commissioning' stage :-)

The first thing done when inspecting the track at Loftus is to check the gauging tool is in fact, in gauge.

This check is recorded on the inspection sheet.

It's a common theme in engineering/technical trades to check/calibrate your test equipment before actually testing anything.

Somebody shipped a step or two on that job.
