The platform doors will be a requirement for unattended ATO. Sydney is going for 'GoA 4', (Grade of Automation) full automatic train operation with no operations staff on board.
Part of the Metro push is to remove the RBTU from the picture. So no operational staff, no one for the Union to claim representation for.
I've seen 'GoA 4' implemented with out platform doors - the stations have obstruction RADAR units under the platform face to detect objects on the track and if something trips the RADAR units, an emergency stop signal is sent to the approaching train.
The entire Bankstown line will have to be fenced with a robust high security fence too, to keep trespassers off the line.
There is going to be much angst at all levels when the first suicide by self driving train occurs - especially when the train fails to notice it's just run over some one and keeps going till a passenger pulls the alarm signal.. (and multiple passengers witness the point of impact - now it's just train drivers that have to suffer, now untrained members of the public in the leading car will too)
