Interrupting a wildly OT thread ranging from interstate trains to NSW goverment corruption, please allow me to try to steer us back towards Australian trams and electric traction ...

Here's an example of an Australian interurban.

This line connected the City of Bendigo with the Borough of Eaglehawk up until 1971 - so was technically an interurban service.

In fact, its sedate operating speed was a bit different to the North Shore line ... but its speed was not a lot different to many so-called interurban services in North America.

Mal Rowe - who found a movie of the actual operation of BCER showed rather a 'rural' operation
