How is silt removed from Melbourne tramway points ? How often are points inspected, cleaned, lubricated and checked for wear in the mechanism ?

I just realised that your reference was to the marks in the first pic - behind the tram.

The marks I referred to were (just) visible in the second pic - of the points.

There was certainly a lot of silt in the points - but it's not visible in the pic I made.

Mal Rowe - who knew what had happened when he heard the big bang as the tram dropped back into the groove.
