Sydney went the other way. When the railways lost control of the tramways to Sydney and Newcastle tramway trusts in 1930, moving to to a pro-road, pro-bus, anti-tram administration 1932 that saw tramways as the problem the die was cast. The timeline for tramway closure laid down in the mid to late 30s was more or less followed, with the 1961 demise more or less as predicted when the initial closure proposals were floated in the 30s.
