August 12 2017 Road chaos looms for CBD as Spencer Street sewerage works begin More than a year of road chaos looms for a busy CBD street so a century-old sewerage system can be duplicated to cope with extra human waste brought on by a surge in apartment buildings.
The increase in apartment buildings at the CBD's western end will force the partial closure of Spencer Street from next week.
There will be delays on Spencer Street during more than a year of roadworks.. Photo: Jessica Shapiro The works will last for up to 15 months and will see the shutdown of half of Spencer Street's southbound lanes, from Little Lonsdale Street to the Yarra River, while City West Water lays almost 700 metres of extra sewerage pipes.
Spencer Street is one of the city's busiest pedestrian and car thoroughfares.

Forecasts anticipate growth of 60,000 new apartments in the CBD over the next 35 years, including 14,000 apartments in the Spencer Street area.
Melbourne City Council lord mayor Robert Doyle said earlier this year that City West Water had to duplicate the 100-year-old sewer to cope with the new residences being built along Spencer Street.
He predicted the lane closure would have a serious impact on traffic.
"It's a very big job, very disruptive. We will do our best to make sure that traffic is moved around there," Cr Doyle said.
"But motorists need to understand for a year there will be that sort of disruption."

The sewer works are just the latest in a number of infrastructure projects that will bring disruption to roads and footpaths in the city.
The biggest infrastructure project in the CBD is the Andrews government's new rail tunnel underneath Swanston Street. Major construction works begin on it next year and will continue until 2026.
The City West Water sewer duplication works in Spencer Street will be the first of four stages of major pipe upgrades to Melbourne's CBD sewerage system.
What to expect
City West Water has outlined four early work sites including the corners of Little Lonsdale Street, Lonsdale Street, Bourke Street and Flinders Lane along Spencer Street.
Early works include locating existing water, gas and fibre optic services before major construction works begins in October.
A City West Water spokeswoman said two sites would be done at a time with the preliminary works taking about a week to complete at each location.
"We will complete the works at two sites at a time to minimise the impact on road users," she said.
From Monday, motorists are being warned all southbound traffic along Spencer Street near Little Lonsdale Street will be closed with detours in place.
Motorists will also feel the squeeze from early next week at the corner of Lonsdale Street with southbound traffic along Spencer Street reduced to a single lane and no right hand turns permitted into the Southern Cross Station car park.
Lonsdale Street east and west-bound will be limited by a lane closure in each direction at the intersection. The pedestrian crossing at the top of Lonsdale Street will also be closed with foot traffic diverted to the other side of Spencer Street.
By the end of August works will have moved down to Bourke Street with westbound traffic reduced to one lane with only right hand turns permitted into Spencer Street.
The Spencer Street end of Flinders Lane will be also be impacted with all southbound traffic detoured left into Flinders Lane and right onto King Street and back onto Spencer Street via Flinders Street. Pedestrians will also be diverted to a temporary crossing on Flinders Lane.
Work teams will be at each site during the day and night removing sections of bitumen in the road to locate underground services.
There will also be large trucks on site and temporary barriers erected around these locations to keep pedestrians, cyclists, workers and drivers safe.
Once early works are completed, major construction will start at the Lonsdale Street intersection of Spencer Street in October followed by works at Flinders Lane then Bourke Street next year.
