Tramways and Light Rail in Melbourne
  Mal Rowe

Warren Doubleday and I were talking about tramway vs light rail in Melbourne.

While it might be fashionable in another great Australian city to say 'Melbourne only does trams' the reality is that Melbourne does both *street tramways* - where the tram track lanes are shared with other road users and*light rail *- where the tram tracks are used only by trams 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I made my starting point a map available from Wikimedia Commons at: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Melbourne_trams_map.gif

It's the only map I am aware of that is geographically to scale.

Firstly I marked what is traditionally called 'reserved track' using black 'crosshatching. Then I went over the routes and marked in red sections where the tram lines are effectively segregated from other users. The result is attached.

Note the new red bit in Toorak Rd West !

I'd be glad to have comments and corrections.

Mal Rowe - who reckons that the GTCOTS has a lot more 'light rail' than is commonly recognised
