Sydney 'R1' 2013 at Petersham
  Noel Reed

Here is Sydney 'R1' No.2013 about to turn from Trafalgar St to Audley St [earlier Palace St (south)], Petersham en route to Canterbury on 20 November, 1954, the last operating day of the Canterbury to Darling St Wharf cross suburban route. Note the "battle scar" on the bumper of the tram from frequent contact with the dummy (grip trolley) on the 1 in 8 (12 percent) grade of the counterweight incline at Balmain.

Last week, 24 April 2008 I was at Petersham and I photographed the present day scene at the Trafalgar St - Audley St corner. The bitumen paved outline of the tramway can be seen in the background. Almost all buildings from the 1954 scene are still in existence.

The trees at the left are on the south side of the six track suburban railway through Petersham.
A large roundabout is now at this corner. An aircraft on the flight path from the north-west to Sydney Airport can be seen above the buildings.

Noel Reed.
