Any work that is repetitive can lead to daydreaming after the job is basically mastered.

And by the way, I think that all my collisions I had when driving foot controlled trams occurred when I was chatting to somebody beside me, including a near miss while chatting to an Inspector. I saw situations developing but possible dangers did not register in my brain.

OT, but I believe that hands-free car phone use is very nearly as dangerous as hand held. Both cause some distraction from potential dangers on the road.
