What makes you assume that “other road users” aren’t daydreaming or distracted Noel, or that they feel any obligation to be “alert” ?

Your average motorist has a lot more distractions and daydream inducers available right there in the car, and they seem a lot more “alert" to those things than what’s going on outside the car.
