Why would tram drivers be daydreaming or distracted ? Does the ‘automatic self steering’ of a tram make them less alert than drivers of other road vehicles ?

This made me think of the late night tram to La Perouse in Sydney. All home-going passengers had left the tram so the driver set the controller ‘in series’ and went back for a smoke with the conductor. The tram then ‘self steered’ itself to the terminus.

You add more complexities to a tram and you end up with more things to go wrong and disrupt the service.

Any number of things can cause a car ahead collision but nearly always it comes back to the driver not taking into account circumstances such as leaves on the track and going to fast in such situations.

Or simply daydreaming or otherwise distracted.

Such a system would have to distinguish between trams on adjacent tracks. On curves, that may be particularly difficult.
