Re: Why trams can''t win over motorists

I agree with you exactly and have made my points on many previous occasions.  Trams and or  other PT having to wait, stationery and with all doors closed against exit ir entry, - for a full traffic cycle at a major junction,  only to pass across as soon as the light turns green,  and then  immediately stop on the far side , -  this is just ridiculous. Impulse button on trams approaching traffic lights  should either activate the sequence or hold it until the tram or bus has passed. That starts to make sense of just where the stops are placed, and how they are activated. Meanwhile, all the major traffic light sequences seem to be loaded against public transport. If that nice Mr Phillips had it all sorted out in Amsterdam over fifty years ago, why are we still waiting to be dragged out of the 1950,s in 2017 Melbourne?

That’s not the point Graham.
David’s point is that reading is more interesting and/or productive than watching the brake lights of the equally gridlocked vehicle in front of you.
Road based PT,  whether trams or buses, will only speed up when there's a rigorous priority for existing road space policy prioritising highest capacity per lane as the determinant of who gets the fastest trip. If sole occupant vehicle drivers want to sit in their car during the peak that’s fine, but they should have to expect that every more efficient mode - PT, bicycles, powered two wheelers, high occupancy shared vehicles - is going to be prioritised over them.
Also, traffic inducing road capacity increases like toll road construction has to stop - it is the problem, not part of the solution.
It’s only fair.

Strange,  in my eighty four years I have never yet felt the need to read  anything as I ,quote - crawl along in a traffic jam, - but maybe that,s a new  experiene yet to be enjoyed.Get real David!Regards, G.

Yes its a pity that most Australian administrations place so much emphasis on the road including their pet solution - buses which are just part of the road gridlock.

PT is not always slower either, even door-to-door and especially in peak periods and increasingly crowded Saturdays. And you're not allowed to read when you're sitting in that comfy, cosy car crawling along in a traffic gridlock.
