My family moved back to Melbourne in Aug 1953 when I was 10 years old. The following year I began attending the YMCA on Saturday mornings, catching the No 48 tram from Nth Balwyn. I’m sure there were safety zones on both sides of Swanston St because I alighted on the western side so I could walk across Princes Bridge to where the YMCA was then, opposite the Glacierium in City Rd

I didn’t post this on TDU because I can’t be 100% sure, say about 95%.

Going only on photos, I think that Roger's recollection is probably right.
The extra zones were gone in the 1960s.
